Volunteer Activities

Volunteer activities include collecting food from drives, delivering food to homebound clients, sorting donated food and completing light clerical duties. Most volunteers work in the Pantry - stocking shelves, keeping paperwork orderly or assisting clients while they make their food selections. Up to 15 volunteers are needed to operate each shift — and the Food Pantry is open seven shifts per week.

Volunteer Opportunities Include the following:

Pantry Helper: Work on the food line with clients as they make their selections. May be required to replenish stock or clean up spills. Requirements: A friendly, helpful demeanor; some basic training required. Knowledge of the Spanish language a plus. Monday-Friday, 12:45-3:15 pm; Thursday, 5-8:15 pm; and Saturday, 9 am-noon.

Stock Person: Replenish shelves with food items, as needed, before the Food Pantry opens each day or during hours of operation. Requirements: Some light lifting and steering of carts carrying food items. Basic training is provided. Shifts vary but are scheduled Monday-Friday, 9 am-noon.

Front Desk Attendant: Receive clients as they arrive, locate their card from files and register first-time clients. Some verification of personal information is required. Customer service skills and/or knowledge of the Spanish language a plus. Basic training is provided. Monday-Friday, 12:45-3:15 pm; Thursday, 5:30-8:15 pm; and Saturday, 9 am-noon.

Food Sorter: Sort donated food items and prepare for distribution. Basic training is provided. Attention to detail a plus. Shift length varies and can be scheduled anytime during 9 am-4 pm Monday-Friday and 9 am-noon Saturday.

Receptionist: Answer and direct calls to staff. Occasional minor clerical duties and repackaging of pantry items may be requested. Requirements: Clear speaking voice with friendly demeanor and problem-solving skills. No computer skills needed. Basic training is provided. Knowledge of the Spanish language a plus. One shift open Thursday, 9 am-noon. Five shifts open Monday-Friday, noon-3 pm.

Drivers: Use the Pantry vehicles to deliver collection barrels and collect food donations. Requirements: Valid drivers license, good driving record, friendly demeanor with knowledge of the Waukesha area a plus. Some light lifting required. Basic training is provided. Volunteers are needed for limited hours Monday-Friday, 9 am-3 pm.
